Carmen Schaich develops her own printing techniques, such as glass etching.
She uses prepared glass panes as printing blocks, which she fires at with a slingshot. Not only precise aiming but also the firing distance, the force of the shot, and the size of the metal balls are crucial. The process of working with the balls is a controlled coincidence that she has learned to master. For the work “Strange Love (green glass),” she needed over 2,300 slingshot shots to “draw” the motif.
The resulting impacts, cracks, and broken edges are then printed using traditional intaglio techniques with oil paint on Hahnemühle handmade paper. Glass etchings are always one-of-a-kind and cannot be reproduced.
Carmen Schaich’s glass etchings combine technical precision with a quiet yet menacing beauty.
In 2018, she was awarded the Encouragement Prize at DIE GROSSE, the North Rhine-Westphalia Art Exhibition in Düsseldorf, for her large-format etchings created using various intaglio techniques she developed herself. She has also received several working grants from the Kunstfonds Foundation, an honorary diploma in 2021 as part of the Jutta Cuny-Franz Memorial Award at the Hentrich Glass Museum, and an artist residency in Mongolia in 2024. Alongside her prints on paper, she creates drawings, sculptures, and installations.
