‘Perception of ideas leads to new ideas’ is the twenty-first of thirty-five Sentences on Conceptual Art that the American artist Sol LeWitt wrote down in 1969 as key tenets for that trend in art, giving it its name in the process.[1] He regarded the concept and the idea as the most important aspects of a work of art; its execution was declared to be a subordinate mechanical activity. In Conceptual Art, the aim is not the creative invention of pictorial realities in their own right; it is rather with the greatest possible objectivity and clarity of definition that the artist elaborates a finding, a statement on art itself or on identified changes in art. In its manifestations this goes hand-in-hand with a dissolving of traditional art forms in that their object condition is whittled away. In other words, the work of art no longer subsists in a material, tangible form, but is described with the aid of texts, diagrams and photographs and only comes about through mental, associative processes in the viewer’s imagination. That explains Sentences of LeWitt’s like ‘For each work of art that becomes physical there are many variations that do not’ (12) or ‘Since no form is intrinsically superior to another, the artist may use any form, from an expression of words (written or spoken) to physical reality, equally’ (15). [1] Cf. Sol Lewitt, http://www.ubu.com/papers/lewitt_sentences.html, last accessed 29 May 2016.
